Game Recap

There is no way they can be this good. Not this year. Not after losing seven players from last year’s team. Not with Jakayla Halbrooks and Taylor Tomlinson missing time with injuries. Not after losing a district game for the first time over three years. Well folks, if you were waiting to read the obituary of the Christoval Lady Cougars basketball program, you can keep waiting! The Lady Cougars defeated the visiting Forsan Lady Buffaloes 41-29 last night to improve to 20-7 on the season and 6-1 in district, avenging their loss at Forsan last month. Both Halbrooks and Tomlinson were missing for that game, and both started tonight, and although they were welcome additions, to give them all the credit for the win would be misleading. Junior post K’Lee Loehman was a beast in the middle for the Lady Cougars with 11 points, but her contribution went beyond the scoreboard. Maricela Riojas has unmatched speed for almost every girl in this district, and she used that speed to harass the Lady Buffs ball-handlers. Sophomore Kayce Jackson hit some big shots and finished with 7 points, and senior Naomi Dixon, who has been a steadying force all season, had 11 points as well. The Lady Cougars still have a lot of work to do to win their fifth consecutive district championship, including a rematch against Irion County next week, but bet against them at your own risk. It hasn’t worked all season.
