Anthony High School
Christoval High School
The Christoval Cougars were eliminated from the playoffs by #2-ranked Anthony 56-35 in the Area round of the state playoffs. The Cougars made an effort to force Anthony to play a more deliberate pace than they were used to. Anthony averaged 88 points per game during district and won their first playoff game 93-57. The first half played out pretty well for the Cougars. They handled Anthony’s pressure and led the game 20-16 with less than a minute before half, but an and-one and another layup before the buzzer gave Anthony a 21-20 halftime lead. Anthony came out of the half on an 8-0 run, hitting their first two three-pointers of the game, opening a 9-point lead. The Cougars would hang tough the rest of the 3rd quarter, and was within 9 points with 5 minutes left in the game. In the end, the boys just ran out of gas and Anthony was able to put the game away. Hats off to them and best of luck in their playoff run.
The game was a culmination of a lot of hard work for perhaps the most successful senior class the school has ever seen. This Class of 2017 put up a 76-21 record, winning 36 of 40 district basketball games. This team says goodbye to Pierce Parmer, Seth Parker, Trenton Burchett, Cole Carpenter, Roby George, Christian Mayfield, Jeramiah Moreno, Robert Brown, Brian Titus, and Bacon Williams. They will be missed for not only what they accomplish on the basketball court, leaving a winning legacy for future teams to follow, but also for their character. I’ve personally known most of these young men since they were young 7th grade boys. It has been my great pleasure to watch them grow into the men they are becoming. They’ve never backed down from a challenge and played with more heart and determination that most teams. Congratulations on a great career guys, continue to attack life with that same heart and determination.
