On Monday, February 28, the Lady Cougars golf team traveled to Sonora to compete in their first tournament of the 2017 season. The girls were paired with the defending 3A state champion Lady Broncos of Sonora and the Wall Lady Hawks. Taylor Tomlinson, our 2016 state qualifier, began her quest to return to state with a strong performance, shooting an 88. She finished in a three-way tie for 4th place, only three strokes off the lead. Elise Baker played really well on the front nine, but found trouble off of the tee on the back carding a 103. Kaitlyn Loehman rounded out our top three posting a 118. The rest of the team of Scarlett Moore, McKenna Behrens and Jaclyn Biggerstaff played great at times, but the course proved to be tough for them as well. For three of the girls this was their first high school tournament, and everyone gained very valuable experience playing with some of the best in the state.
Taylor – 88, Elise – 103, Kaitlyn – 118, Scarlett – 127, McKenna 131, Jaclyn – 139
Team Total – 440
The boys were on the course on Wednesday, March 1st. The conditions turned out to be very tough, with 20 mph winds and even higher gusts out of the north. James Calvert shot an 87 to lead the team. He placed 3rd individually after winning a one hole playoff with a young man from Wall. The two played the par 3 9th hole with James hitting the green while his competitor was short of the green. James was able to make his second putt from 8 feet after the kid from Wall missed his par attempt from off the back of the green. Cameron Bailey finished with a 93 and Paul Moore rounded out the top three with a 97. I know these guys were a little disappointed with their scores, but the wind and cold made for a tough day for the entire field.
James – 87, Cameron – 93, Paul – 97, Jeremiah Moreno – 123, Bryan Ortiz – 126
Team Total – 400
